After studying about art criticism and art history, students examined Edward Hopper's 1930 painting 'Early Sunday Morning.' Students were asked to create a painting that continued the rows of empty shops. They needed to use the same hues, values and intensities. They needed to create harmony (one of the principles of design) by representing the same vertical and horizontal lines. They were asked to add variety by placing a circular shape somewhere in their work. Most importantly, they needed to try to capture the same feeling of loneliness.

Explain how you used the principles of harmony and variety. How/why do you believe that your painting is successful in expressing the same mood of loneliness as Edward Hopper's.
